A black with a story. Rohrer & Klingner Leipziger Schwarz, or ‘Leipzig Black’, is named after the city where the company was founded in 1892, and it delivers a deep, heavily saturated black with a subtle hint of blue.

Key highlights

• Colour: very dark black with a slight blue-black cast
• Saturation: high
• Flow: wet and smooth
• Shading: minimal, for a clean, even line
• Drying: on the slower side
• Type: dye-based writing ink
• Bottle: 50ml glass

Why choose Leipziger Schwarz?

Many black inks look grey on the page. Leipziger Schwarz is dark and dense, giving crisp, professional writing that reads beautifully on white and ivory paper alike.

How it behaves

This is a wet, well-lubricated ink, so it suits fine and extra-fine nibs that can feel dry with other inks. Because it is generous with flow, give it a little extra time to dry on coated papers.

Ideal for

• Signatures, contracts and formal correspondence
• Daily note-taking in fine-nibbed pens
• Sketching and line work with dip pens

About the ink house

Rohrer & Klingner was founded in Leipzig in 1892 and still makes its inks in Germany, today in Zella-Mehlis. Its dye-based writing inks are designed for fountain pens, steel-nib dip pens and calligraphy tools.

Frequently asked questions

Is it waterproof?

No. Some of the line may remain after a spill, but it is not a water-resistant ink.

Is it easy to clean?

Yes, it flushes out of pens with water.

Pen pairing ideas

Leipziger Schwarz shines in fine and extra-fine steel nibs, including Japanese pens that tend to write dry, and gives a crisp, dark line on Leuchtturm1917, Rhodia and Clairefontaine paper.
