A centuries-old tradition

For hundreds of years, iron gall ink was the standard ink for manuscripts, letters and legal documents. It is made from gallnuts and iron salts, and it bonds with the paper as it oxidises. Rohrer & Klingner is one of the few makers that still produces iron gall ink for modern fountain pens.

How Ebony behaves

Iron gall ink goes on paper in one shade and darkens as it oxidises, becoming permanent and water resistant. Because it is more acidic than ordinary ink, we recommend using it in modern steel or gold-nib pens, flushing the pen with water every week or two, and not leaving it in a pen unused for long periods.

Why choose a black iron gall ink?

• A rich black that is well suited to official and archival writing
• Permanent, smudge-resistant results once dry
• A classic, scholarly character that ordinary inks cannot match

About the maker

Founded in Leipzig in 1892, Rohrer & Klingner now makes its inks in Zella-Mehlis, Germany, and is particularly respected for its iron gall formulas.

Frequently asked questions

Is it safe for my pen?

Yes, with regular care. Flush the pen every week or two and avoid leaving the ink in a pen that will not be used for a long time.

Why is it called Iron Gall Nut?

Gallnuts, formed on oak trees, are the traditional source of the tannins that give iron gall ink its permanence.
