The beauty of black urushi

Black urushi, or kuro, is the most classic of all Japanese lacquer finishes. Built up in hand-applied layers over ebonite, it has a depth that paint cannot match, and over the years it softens into a gentle glow as it is handled.

Ebonite underneath

The Black Custom Urushi’s body is turned from ebonite, a material that has been used for fine pens for over a century. It is light, warm in the hand and makes the perfect foundation for urushi lacquer.

Matching the Custom Urushi fountain pen

Collectors who own Pilot’s Custom Urushi fountain pen often look for a companion for quick notes and signatures. The Black ballpoint shares its ebonite body, urushi finish and gold-plated details, with a simple twist to extend and retract the tip.
