Write a message only you can read. Noodler’s Whiteness of the Whale is not a white or grey ink at all: it dries almost clear on paper and reveals itself only under ultraviolet (black) light, when your writing glows. It comes in a 1oz (29ml) bottle, item 19807.

• Type: UV-fluorescent ‘invisible’ ink

• Item number: 19807

Secret writing for grown-ups

Remember invisible ink from childhood? This is the fountain pen version. Fill a pen, write a note, and the page looks almost blank. Shine a UV torch on it and the words appear in a soft glow. Some writers notice a faint, warm eggshell tint on white paper, but in ordinary light the writing is very hard to see.

Clever ways to use it

• Hidden messages in letters, cards and treasure hunts
• Private notes and passwords in a journal
• Secret signatures or marks on artwork and documents
• Glowing details for UV-lit parties and events

An ink for experimenters

Noodler’s also suggests mixing Whiteness of the Whale with other Noodler’s inks to lighten them and add fluorescence. If you enjoy blending your own colours, a few drops can make a custom ink glow under UV light. Always test a small amount first.

Water resistant

Like many Noodler’s inks, it holds up well to water once dry, so your hidden message will not simply wash away.

Good to know

You will need a UV (black light) torch to see your writing, and it does not show up on black paper. It is not fast drying, so give it time before closing a notebook.

Frequently asked questions

Is this a white ink for dark paper?

No. It is a clear, UV-reactive ink, not an opaque white.

Is it safe for fountain pens?

Yes, it is a fountain pen ink with no shimmer or pigment particles. Flush the pen with water when you change inks.

Why the name?

‘The Whiteness of the Whale’ is the title of a famous chapter in Herman Melville’s Moby-Dick.

Pen pairing ideas

Keep it in an inexpensive pen labelled clearly, since you cannot see the ink level by colour, and carry a small UV torch to reveal your messages.
