Hold the Kaweco Liliput Kolibri up to the light and it changes colour before your eyes: blues melt into purples, greens glow into gold. Kolibri is German for hummingbird, and this tiny pocket fountain pen captures that bird’s shimmering feathers on a body small enough to hide in your palm.

What makes the Kolibri unique

Kaweco makes the Kolibri from stainless steel with a PVD colour coating, which produces unusual metallic colour combinations. Because the colours form during the process itself, every pen comes out a little different. Even the stainless steel nib is heat-treated with a laser to give it a rainbow finish that matches the body. Polishing the nib can remove its rainbow colour, and ink left to dry on it can discolour it, so a gentle rinse and a wipe with a soft cloth is all it needs.

The Liliput: tiny, but serious

The Liliput is one of the smallest fountain pens in the world. Closed, it measures only 97mm, small enough to vanish into any pocket. Post the cap on the back and it grows to a comfortable 126mm for writing. It is the ideal pen for a wallet, a pocket diary or a travel pouch, and it means you never have to borrow a pen again.

Writing details

• Nib choices: Extra Fine, Fine, Medium, Broad or Double Broad
• Uses short standard international cartridges; a Summer Purple cartridge is included
• Screw cap that seals well for travel
• Clipless design; a Liliput clip can be added separately
• Weight about 16g (Kaweco’s figure), satisfyingly solid for its size

A collector’s piece

The Kolibri belongs to Kaweco’s limited Collection series and was released in 2025. Collection pens are made for a limited time, so once they are gone, they are gone. It arrives in a silver tin with a matching sleeve, which makes it an eye-catching gift for anyone who loves colour, nature or tiny beautiful things.

Tips for owning a pocket pen

Because the Liliput is so short, posting the cap is part of the experience; it locks the pen into a full writing length. Carry a spare cartridge in your wallet, flush the nib with water every few weeks, and keep the PVD finish away from abrasive cleaners so the rainbow colours stay vivid.
