How Button Fill works

Esterbrook’s Button Fill system is built into the pen and is inspired by Parker’s Vacumatic of the 1940s. Unscrew the end of the barrel to reveal the button, dip the nib in ink and press the button a few times: the pen draws ink in with each stroke. It holds more ink than a typical cartridge or converter. It is a satisfying, hands-on ritual that connects you with the golden age of fountain pens.

The beauty of tortoise

Tortoise patterns have graced fine pens and spectacles for over a century. Each hand-turned barrel shows its own play of light through the acrylic, so no two pens look exactly alike.

Choosing your nib

Esterbrook’s steel nibs are smooth and reliable. Choose EF or F for small, precise handwriting, M or B for a bolder line, a 1.1 stub for elegant variation, or one of the flex nibs if you want to add a little expression to your strokes with gentle pressure.

About Esterbrook

Esterbrook has been making writing instruments since 1858. The modern Estie brings that heritage to life with generous proportions, beautiful materials and the brand’s signature cushion-closure cap, which helps stop the nib from drying out.

Frequently asked questions

Can I use cartridges?

No. This model fills only from a bottle of ink using the built-in button mechanism.

Is it a good first fountain pen?

Yes, if you enjoy bottled ink. The filling process is simple once you have tried it a couple of times.
