The pen Mark Twain loved

Roy Conklin patented his self-filling crescent design in Toledo, Ohio, in 1897, and the Conklin Pen Company was founded the following year. One of its most famous fans was Mark Twain, who endorsed the pen and appreciated a very practical detail: the crescent sticking out of the barrel stopped the pen rolling off his desk. That is why this model carries his name and signature today.

How the crescent filler works

Inside the barrel is a flexible ink sac. Turn the locking ring to free the crescent, dip the nib into the ink, press the crescent down and release it: the sac springs back and draws ink in through the feed. Turn the ring back to lock the crescent in place, and you are ready to write.

Black Chase with rose gold

The Black Chase version pairs a textured black resin body with rose gold plating on the clip, crescent and trim. The warm metal brings out the vintage character of the design, while the black body keeps it elegant and versatile.

The nib

Conklin fits the Mark Twain Crescent with a German JoWo stainless steel nib with a crescent-shaped breather hole, a subtle nod to the filling system. Choose from Extra Fine to Broad, a 1.1 Stub, or Omniflex for flexible, expressive lines.
