If you have been searching for a true, unapologetic red, meet Rohrer & Klingner Morinda. This 50ml German fountain pen ink is a bright, saturated scarlet that looks like ripe tomatoes on the page, with a wet, generous flow and lively shading in broader nibs.

Key highlights

• Colour: bright scarlet red, fairly pure with no strong orange or pink lean
• Saturation: high
• Flow: wet and lubricated
• Shading: visible in medium, broad and stub nibs
• Cleaning: flushes out of pens very easily
• Water resistance: none, it is a standard writing ink
• Bottle: 50ml glass, made in Germany

A red that means business

Red ink has a job to do: it has to stand out. Morinda does exactly that. Reviewers place it between classic Sheaffer Red and the brighter J. Herbin 1670 family, which makes it vivid enough for corrections and headings, yet clean and balanced enough to enjoy as a letter-writing colour.

Where does the name come from?

Morinda is a genus of tropical plants, including the Indian mulberry, or noni. Its root bark has been used for centuries across Asia, including India, to make a traditional red dye for cotton textiles. Rohrer & Klingner does not explain the name officially, but the link to this classic natural red is a lovely story to write with.

How Morinda behaves in your pen

This is a wet ink, so it keeps a fine nib gliding and gives broad nibs a juicy, saturated line. On good paper you will see the colour pool slightly at the end of strokes. On very cheap, absorbent copier paper it can feather, so pair it with fountain-pen-friendly paper for the crispest results.

• Teachers and editors: bold, unmistakable corrections
• Students: headings, key formulas and revision notes
• Journalers: dates, highlights and festive greetings

Easy to live with

Bright reds sometimes have a reputation for staining. Morinda is a well-behaved, dye-based ink that rinses out quickly with plain water, so it is a safe choice even for demonstrator pens when you clean them regularly.

Frequently asked questions

Is Morinda waterproof?

No. It is a standard writing ink with practically no water resistance, although some testers found a faint, legible trace after a splash.

How fast does it dry?

That depends on the paper and nib. On coated, fountain-pen-friendly paper it can take a while, so give it a few extra seconds before closing your notebook.

Can I use it in a dip pen?

Yes, Rohrer & Klingner writing inks work in fountain pens, dip pens and calligraphy tools.

Pen pairing ideas

Try Morinda in a red or black pen with gold trim for a classic look, or load it into a medium steel nib as a dedicated marking pen alongside your everyday blue.
